A Letter from my client and rising star

Hi, I’m Dema, currently studying for a Master of Management at the University of Melbourne. Since arriving in Australia, I’ve been searching for a job in my field of experience and study—just like many other international students.

I quickly realised that most career jobs require one or more of the following: local experience, permanent residency, or full-time work rights. Without these, securing a job felt almost impossible. After sending out numerous CVs and receiving no responses, I realised that one of the best ways to break into my industry was through an internship.

Fast forward to today—I am currently working as a paid accounting intern with the potential for a full-time offer at the end of my internship. Here are my top tips for securing an internship in Australia:

1. Utilise Available Resources to the Fullest

Leverage every resource around you to increase your chances. Attend networking events, connect with like-minded professionals, and engage in activities that bring you closer to your industry. Even if you don’t land an opportunity immediately, every experience pushes you out of your comfort zone and helps you grow.

For me, I subscribed to industry newsletters and my university’s career emails, constantly checking for internship opportunities and networking events. Through these efforts, I learned about university-sourced internships early and applied before spots filled up. The result? I received 4 out of 5 internship offers within just one month of dedicated effort on my CV and interview preparation.

2. Take Every Step Seriously & Believe in Yourself

Every step of the process matters. Approach each application with the belief that you can succeed. Many internships lead to full-time job offers, so give it your best shot.

Your CV is crucial—it might not even be reviewed by a human first but by an Applicant Tracking System (ATS). Get professional guidance to optimise your CV. I personally took Jana’s Career Blossom program, which provided invaluable CV and interview tips. She also reviewed my CV, which boosted my confidence immensely.

3. Ace the Interview Process

Once you pass the initial CV screening and get a phone screening or interview, the outcome depends entirely on how well you perform. Even if you don’t succeed in your first few interviews, treat them as practice. Each one will improve your skills and bring you closer to your goal.

My preparation strategy:

  • I compiled a list of potential interview questions.
  • I researched responses on YouTube and sought guidance from Jana.
  • I refined my answers with the help of ChatGPT.
  • I practised repeatedly—by myself, with close friends, and even in front of a mirror.

Confidence is key!

Approach every interview as if you are the perfect fit for the job. Additionally, prepare insightful questions to ask the interviewer, it sets you apart from other candidates. In my case, I asked about the company’s internal culture because I believe work should be an enjoyable and fulfilling part of life as we spend significant amount of time there.

4. Keep Trying & Trust the Process

I know firsthand how frustrating it can be to put in so much effort and see no immediate results. But trust that everything happens at the right time.

While losing my part-time job, which was not in my career field, was a setback because I lost an income source, it gave me the opportunity to fully commit to finding an internship and that dedication paid off. If you’re struggling, know that even challenges can lead to the right path.

Final Advice:

Don’t pressure yourself too much. Small daily improvements, like refining a sentence in your CV, are still significant progress. Be patient, stay persistent, and don’t be too hard on yourself.

Good luck to everyone on their journey!
